Special Recognition of the Levels & Moors

Discover the Levels supports the current idea that the Somerset Levels should be given a special status in recognition of its international significance for:

  • its rich and abundant wetland wildlife, historic landscape and heritage
  • its long history of the landscape being changed to meet the needs of local people
  • the unique culture that has developed among local communities

    • The landscape, heritage, environment and culture of the Somerset Levels are vulnerable to forces such as climate change and in the support for agriculture. Special recognition or status for the Levels would help local people tackle these threats and so achieve a prosperous future for the area.

    Recognition of the Somerset Levels as a distinct Cultural Landscape would build a stronger identity for the whole area.

    This will help in the marketing and promotion of the Somerset Levels and its local products. It would also help local people and businesses to have more influence on the development and well being of the area in the future.
