About the Somerset Levels & Moors
“Everywhere there is water, glinting in the sunlight, catching the eye as you turn a corner; edging each field and forming a silver network as you look down from a hill at the great expanse below. Water is what makes the place come to life.” Williams (1982)
The Levels and Moors are a wetland gem lying in the heart of Somerset. They have been reclaimed from the sea and from marshland over many generations and are the largest area of wet grassland and wetland habitats remaining in England today.
The Levels are very rich in wildlife, and are internationally famous for their migratory birds and wintering waterfowl which provide some amazing natural spectacles as flocks of birds move around the wetlands.
Many farmers use the wet grasslands to produce some of the best beef and dairy products in the country, which can now be bought in the Farmers’ Markets and local farm shops.
The villages on the hills and islands have a fascinating history, many attractive churches and pubs where you will receive a warm welcome.
